Drawings from the past..

Ninna-ji, Kyoto, Shoro belfry, Japan

The temple of Ninna-ji was built at the end of the 9th century. At first it was Monseki-jiin, which also served as the residence of a member of the Imperial family who had entered the priesthood. Presently, this temple is the center of the Omuro sect of Shingon Buddhism.  

To the west of the Kondo temple building there is a beautifully large and imposing vermilion tower with a bell Shoro Belfry tower, a fine example of the bell towers built in the Edo Period. It is said to have been built in the Kanei Period and it has been designated as an important cultural property. The watercolor sketch shows the vivid vermilion and black colors of the bell tower structure, a favorite combination of colors of mine.

A painted view of the weekend scene in Pacific Grove, California...always a beautiful place to visit, foggy days or sunny days...

Napa Silverado view flipped and finished...

Added in some shadow touches and texture to the foreground and wrapped up the brushwork, flipped the image to place the building on the right side and then noticed the similarity to the Kauai waterfall painting from several weeks ago...

Mission San Jose was founded on June 11, 1797 by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen on a site which was part of a natural highway by way of the Livermore Valley to the San Joaquin Valley. It is the fourteenth of the 21 Spanish Missions in Alta California. The site chosen for the only mission on the east side of San Francisco Bay had been inhabited for countless generations by the Ohlone Indians. Their village at this site was known as Orisom...or Oroysom...

Mission Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara Mission was founded in 1786, and the main church building completed in 1820. The 1925 earthquake destroyed the mission buildings and the complex was rebuilt and finally restored in 1953...
