 Here are my hand drawn visual notes from the Pioneers in Design event last night for IIDA … ENJOY!  Trying to capture the energy of the wonderful design activism of Liz Ogbu from Studio O.  She is a doer, thinker, a spatial justice activist, an architect, a designer, a social innovator and a person who cares about the people and she is designing in the apocalypse.

One week countdown to Honor Awards IIDA

Stepping out and down the stair sculpture of Bruce Nauman at Oliver Ranch...

For the IIDA Northern California event in September, our group had the opportunity to do a hiking tour of the Oliver Ranch close to Geyserville, California.

Among the art pieces, the final one was Bruce Naumann concrete staircase sculpture at Oliver Ranch, described as his response to the unique physical contours of the land at the Oliver ranch in Geyserville, California. 

All of the horizontal the treads are exactly the same size, 30 inches square, and then every riser is of a different height with the total length covering a 1/4 of a mile. The smallest rise is 3/8 of an inch; the largest rise is a vertical 17 inches. It is a treat to feel your legs stretch and strain as you descend, and I cannot even imagine the ascent.  

As you descend you must pay attention to your steps and your feet or you may trip and fall because of the steep changes in riser height.

State Street bridge, Chicago visit

This bridge is among the newer of Chicago's deck truss bascule bridges with a 1949 construction date...The bridge is an example of the unique Chicago design which raised the position of the deck truss up just far enough so that the top chord is above the deck like a pony truss, where it can act as a guardrail and also increase both the clearance under the bridge and the streamlined aesthetics of the bridge. This design is known as the railing height truss...

Chicago visit for IIDA and Neocon

Today Chicago boasts somewhere over 40 movable bridges. At least 20 of these are in the downtown area. During Chicago's boating season, which runs from April 15 through November 15, over 52,000 boats pass through the Chicago River, and the bridges are opened close to 30,000 times a year.

An inspirational Talk on Wednesday morning, by the artist, Candy Chang.  Held at the Four Seasons hotel in San Francisco, by the IIDA...Multi-dimensional and social network crossover coolness captures the essence of our dreams, needs and realities.  She now lives in New Orleans (bonus points!) and speaks about the amazing uniqueness of the city and the people.  Her focus is always on the person, the soul, and how we all need to help each other and pull our society back up out of the mud...these are my notes...
