Panorama Pandemic film

Now it is the beginning of May, and it is clear that we are all in this together and we have learned so much about ourselves, our families, our workplaces, our habits and our uncertainties.

When I think about our intensely personal and our newly developed public journeys, I see a different sense of creative energy flowing in many new ways.

We really don’t know what is ahead on these trips we will be taking, but I know that the last ten weeks or so have taught me a lot about what it means to be alive and what it means to be truly challenged by the world we live within.

So here is a short film with some illustrations and thoughts about what has happened in the last ten weeks ... family times, WFH, SIP, diagrams, sharing, reading, painting, cooking, feelings, hiking, mask-making, exploring new virtual worlds and seeing the real neighborhoods …

Redwood Day school drawing lessons at Gensler Oakland

Students from fifth grade class at Redwood Day school in Oakland joined the design studio of Gensler Oakland for a series of design exercises including my Tree House drawing lesson.

Each student begins with a sheet of paper and begins to draw their dream treehouse.

The I begin to do a drawing of a large tree and branches on the writing wall in the Scarlet meeting room.

Then each student is asked to find a spot on the branches of the three and redraw their dream treehouse connected to the branches and eventually connected to other treehouses.

Oakland discussions and the future.

Oakland has long held its own unique character, but will the high-rises and office buildings sprouting up around the city jeopardize that character? How can a city preserve something intangible, but so incredibly important, while continuing to grow in order to provide homes, services and employment? Join us as we discuss how Oakland can expand its capacity without compromising the key attributes of its neighborhoods.

The exquisite Theater known as the Fox in Uptown Oakland...

...Opened the doors in 1928, And originally intended to be named "The Bagdad" because of its Middle Eastern style architecture, the theater instead displayed the name "The Oakland" on the vertical marquee, with the word "Oakland" forming the main portion of the vertical blade sign above the marquee. The Fox was also known as the "West Coast Oakland” back in the day...

Our City Oakland event design challenge

Here is the set of first sketches for our Gensler team idea for the Our City Oakland event challenge.

Now its time to build it, make it, construct it and paint it!

Our City and the City of Oakland are partnering to produce the first Our City: Oakland Fair. The Fair is inviting Oaklanders to imagine, build, and celebrate the future of their community.
This first Fair is focused on the theme of play. From February 4-6 February 2016, Frank Ogawa Plaza will come alive with new public design installations and performances that encourage Oakland kids, families, residents, and visitors of all ages to play in new ways.
