Mendocino Baptist Church ... Corners of the Mouth

...William Kelly had this church built for his wife, Eliza Lee Owen, in 1894.  The Kelley family had already started a small church which became the Presbyterian church in 1868.  Eliza was Baptist and wanted a church of her own faith where she could play the organ,  “This is my Baptist Church in Mendocino, one my husband built with good faith.  Eventually the Baptist church was reopened as a gift shop called Personal Expressions.  Corners of the Mouth had opened in 1975 just down the street in the Kelliowen building.  In 1976 the businesses switched places and Corners has filled the church ever since.

DOM, Diocese of Monterey, St. Vincent dePaul Church in Davenport, California

 

The church building is standing at the end of the Davenport Avenue in the town of Davenport.  Built from concrete and cement supplied from the Cemex plant just north of the town, the church has stood since 1914 and was also apparently a subject of a photograph by Ansel Adams...have not found the image in my interent search...

Hitchcock used the church as a prime setting for a movie, Ansel Adams viewed and framed it in some photos, and I painted and drew it on the weekend.  The schoolhouse is up beyond to the right on the hilltop. this was a rougher sketch approach to capturing the feelings of today and yesterday...
